Refresh old patio furniture without replacing it
Before you shop for a whole new set, check the frame. If it is solid, new cushions can change the color, the comfort and the whole feel of the furniture you already own.
The five-minute check
Most patio sets outlast their cushions by years. Before you shop for a whole new set, walk outside and answer five questions.
- Is the frame solid? Sit in each chair and rock a little. A small wobble is often a loose bolt you can tighten. A cracked weld or a split leg is not.
- Is the finish fixable? Light rust, faded powder coat or gray teak can usually be cleaned, sanded or touched up. Deep rust that flakes through the metal is a sign the frame is near the end.
- Are the cushions removable? If the cushions lift out, they can be replaced. If the fabric is stretched over the frame itself, that is a different job, closer to reupholstery.
- Do you still like the shape? Cushions can change the color, the comfort and the feel of a set. They cannot change its shape. If you love the shape, keep it.
- Is it comfortable? Flat, sagging cushions are the most common reason a set stops getting used. New foam fixes that.
Rule of thumb. If the frame passes the first two questions, new cushions are usually the faster, simpler and less wasteful way to get a set you want to sit in again.
Frame by frame
| Frame | Usually worth keeping when | Time to let go when |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminum | The welds are intact and the finish is only faded or chalky. | Welds are cracked or legs are bent. |
| Wrought iron or steel | Rust is on the surface and brushes off. | Rust has eaten holes through the metal. |
| Teak and hardwood | The wood is gray but sound. A clean and light sand brings it back. | Joints are loose and the wood is soft or rotting. |
| Resin wicker | The weave is tight with a few loose strands. | Strands are brittle and snapping across the seat. |
What new cushions change
- Color and mood. The cushions are most of what you see. A new color can make an old set look like a different set.
- Comfort. Fresh foam at the right thickness makes a chair worth sitting in for an afternoon again.
- Fit. Custom cushions are made to your frame, so there is no gap at the sides and no overhang at the front.
- Mix and match. You can refresh a set you already own and add a bench or chair from somewhere else, then tie them together with the same fabric.
New cushions do not fix a wobbly frame, a rusted leg or a shape you have stopped liking.
When to replace the set
Replace the furniture when the frame fails the check above, when you need a different layout (a sofa instead of four chairs), or when you simply want a new shape. Everything else is a cushion job.
If you are keeping the frame, the next step is measuring. It takes about ten minutes. Our measuring guide walks through it with diagrams and a printable sheet.

Questions
Is it cheaper to buy new cushions than a new patio set?
Usually, when the frame is still sound. A new set means new frames and new cushions. Replacing cushions means paying only for the part that wore out.
Can I replace cushions on a set I bought years ago?
Yes. Custom cushions are made from your measurements, so the age or brand of the set does not matter as long as the cushions are removable.
My cushions are faded but still firm. Are they worth replacing?
That is up to how you feel about the color. If the foam is still comfortable, new cushions are about the look. If the foam is flat, they are about comfort too.
What if my chairs are a mix of different sets?
Measure each style separately. Using the same fabric across different chairs is a simple way to make them feel like one set.
